We found a market where bought a few bits.

Went to the lake with an island in the middle. Visited the temple on the island that we paid about $1 to get in to.

After all that we had to barter a $2 (from $3) “tuk tuk”? back to the hotel as it was too hot to walk back the whole way.

Essence Hotel, Hanoi review

Impeccable! Extremely polite. Extremely helpful. Their breakfast was great. Their dinner was great. Air-con. Laptop in the room. Quiet room despite being in the middle of mayhem on the streets… there was a beer festival going on and we couldn’t hear any of it.

Right in the middle of everything, so restaurants, shops, buses, taxis, everything was easy!

(Nout wrong with this place)

Good morning, Vietnam!

This is a breakfast fit for a king in comparison to the previous hotel we were at. A lovely variety of fruit, cakes, and meats.

We both had the French toast with cinnimon and it was great! Brilliant start to the day, we will need it to survive the hotter temperature here.

First night in Hanoi

After a 45 minute drive from the airport, we arrive right in the middle of it all! The streets are 10 times busier here than in Cambodia. Streets that are the width of a large Europenian car are being walked on, driven through, cycled through, and biked through all at once … with millimeters to spare. It’s impressive. If I was driving I would have been stressed about the damage, but our driver is obviously used to it.

We got out the taxi and were greeted by this. The street was so densely packed with people, the atmosphere was fantastic. Food everywhere, beer everywhere, people everywhere.

After dumping all our stuff in the room, next on the agenda was dinner. We had a wonder round the streets near our hotel and sat down at one of the many placed that offer food. All the place you can eat or drink at have tiny tables and chairs for you to sit on! We went for Salt & Pepper Chicken (grissle or feet, we are not sure). We tried it, but didnt eat all of it as it was basically like eating cartilidge. Great experience, though.

The hotel room has a laptop in it. Total Good send, as using my mobile all the time is wearing thin. A previous guest was clearly a connaisseur of the adult material, with such a specific search term to get right to it.

Found some sound Travel Happy advice

Whilst looking for some information on how much money we should be expecting to change in to Vietnamese Dong… I found this gem:

http://travelhappy.info/vietnam/how-much-money-do-i-need-in-vietnam/

This one stood out to me because of the language that the author decided to use. I was expecting an informative and useful article, but instead I just wanted to share it here for completely different reasons!

A couple of direct quotes:

“Laos will dong you up if you’re headed east.”

But your first dong will probably spit out at you from an ATM

Why would this person write like this if not by accident? Slipping in a cheeky sexy pun doesn’t hurt anyone, but was this person trying to be funny and inject a little humour in to the mix or were they oblivious to their hilarious way or writing? Especially on dry subject like currency,… Can’t blame them for spicing it up to keep you engaged.

Anyway,… made me laugh!

p.s. For anyone thinking of travelling to Vietnam, this information is now unfortunately out-dated and the prices and exchange rates mentioned will not be accurate.

Started packing…

So, in the midst of frantically trying to get the house decorating done (which is another story in itself that I wish I covered properly) we have started packing to go to Vietnam at the end of the week.

The amount of stuff that you realise you never have in the house to go on holiday is unbelievable… we ended up spending £80 in boots for things for the trip: suntan lotion (4 vats of), tooth paste (3 silos of),  mosquito spray, after sun, travel outlet adapters, a decades supply of deodorant, various wires for our Miriad of devices, and the obligatory book that I will promise myself I will read but will probably just use to kill mosquitos that get to close to me.

Some of the contents of our suitcase

All this and we covered only about 40% of the crap that is needed for a holiday abroad to anywhere that is remotely warmer than Scotland.

Despite all this “positively” demonstrated above. I cannot wait to go to. Completely different culture for an amazing experience. My wife has been there before years ago before she met yours truly and is so excited to be going back, so that is obviously a very good sign!

The biggest question is which suit from Dumb and Dumber should I request when I get a one made in Hoi An?
