A parting gift

We check out tomorrow. We came back from dinner and found this in our room:

Sweets

We thank you & will miss you

How lovely! It was coffed in under 2 minutes from the time of discovery.

Abba Cafe

Abba Cafe

Abba Cafe

This restaurant sits at a modest second place behind Georges Rhumerie. Good food. We had a garlic bread and mango salad starters followed by  beef lok lak and beef fried noodles. No complains, very satisfying. As always, the staff were very friendly. And I didn’t have to by bottled water here. They gave you free top ups whenever you needed one.

Our bill came in a little bin

What a 2 dollar tip looks like

Georges Rhumerie

This is the best food we have had in Cambodia so far! Lovely restaurant with indoor / outdoor seating, and a cabana bar.

The staff were welcoming and explained the menu very well if we had questions.

Dim sum starter

Starter: Dim sum

I’ve had dim sum a few times before in various places round the world, but this is the best dim sum I have ever eaten!

Main courses

For main course we had pork masale curry, and pork saucisse. Both were fabulous! Along with the dishes, we got 3 chutneys, and 3 chill is that you can add to your dish. The head chef came out of the kitchen to explain each one of the complimentary chutneys/chillis in detail, and the best way to eat them with your dinner. I had a sample of each with a spoon of my dinner, and every one of them was great.

Really nice restaurant, with a chef that cares about his food.

Breakfast this morning

My breakfast

Compliments to the person who “heated up” the sausages. I can only assume that the method used to achieve this was they sat on them.

Tim Tams

We found them in Siem Reap!

Oh, How I’ve missed you, you delicious Australian God send!

We need another suitcase…

Cafe Indochine

5 minute walk from our hotel. Great food. Great service. We were in and out there within 50 minutes. Perfect dinner for a knackered day looking at temples in the blazing heat.

I little more expensive that the average restaurant, but the price is reflected in the food. No complaints from us for this meal.

Beef Lok Lak

Chicken Amok

mai Tai

We went for the Beef Lol Lak, and Chicken Amok.

The beef was basically steak in a sauce, with chips, but really well executed. Lovely spin on the on the usual steak and chips you’d get in any steak restaurant. Light yet very filling… still had a Death By Chocolate for dessert, though. I earned it from all the walking I did today.

The Chicken Amok was great too. Can’t say a lot about it as I didn’t have it, but trust us, this restaurant is definitely worth the extra money.

For 2 mains, 2 desserts, 1 cocktail, and a large bottle of water it was only $30.50.

Arguably still cheap!

This Toblerone

This… this isn’t right…

Cambodian Toblerone

Cambodian chocolate leaves a lot to be desired…still had to eat 3 bits to make sure, though!

First night in Siem Reap

Siem Reap is a couple of degrees hotter that Phnom Penh at the moment. That doesn’t sound like much, but I’ll tell you that it is 37-39℃ during the day. Mental!

This place is very tourist oriented, with far more tuk tuks, street food, and restaurants. People will pester you a lot here for business, but you just have to be brutal and say no until they leave you alone. You get used to it and they do expect it anyway.

It’s like an Asian mini-Vegas as it reminds me of the strip there. It has music blaring out and lights everywhere!

I wanted to go here for dinner, but it might have been a tad adventurous for us. We settled on a place that was busy and the menu looked OK. We just got pizzas as it was easy. Couldn’t remember the name of it so I just Google searched it and it is called “Happy Special Pizza”. They did a lot more than pizza, though, so we didn’t know that pizza was their thing.

Sitting there starving, our food took 40 minutes to come. This place is a pub that serves food, and we were the only ones eating as far as we could see. The pizzas arrived, and they looked great, but we’re nothing special, in all honesty. Not terrible in any way, just not a decent pizza.

Siem Reap pizza

The bill was only $18 including a cocktail and a large bottle of water, so it was fine for the price.

After dinner we went to the night Market to have a gander. Basically, it’s endless amounts of tat, with added gumph. And they just don’t leave you alone. Mildly infuriating, but ignoring them is yet only way to deal with it.

As it happens, I left my favourite sunglasses on the bus (gutted when I realised! I was having such a relaxing time in the pool at the time too) on the way here so I had to find a half-decent pair to use for going to the temples tomorrow. Got some “Ray Bans” for $5 haggled down from $8. Rubbish but they’ll do. I’ll never get a pair like my favorite ones again. I’ll pull through.

I’m glad we started the trip off in Phnom Penh, as it is a generally a nicer, less touristy place.
